Preventing Cancer, This Week on Your Cancer Today ™
Newport Beach, CA, Nov. 8
One-third of all cancers are attributable to poor diet and lack of exercise. This week, Your Cancer Today examines the evidence and provides tips for living a more healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Stan Wasbin, Medical Director, provides an overview of diet and cancer, including the fact that obesity increases the risk of the disease. On the positive side, eating five servings a day of fruits or vegetables decreases the risk of many cancers including: lung, colon, and esophagus.
An eight year study of more than 48,000 women found that the subjects that maintained a low-fat diet were 40% less likely to get ovarian cancer. (Low fat diet is defined as less than 20% of calories from fat). Dr. Ross L. Prentice of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center recommends that avoiding saturated fats and eating whole grains is the key to lowering the risk of getting cancer.
Dr. Sheila Forman, of the Your Cancer Today Medical Advisory Board, suggests that individuals develop a lifestyle plan and only change one habit at a time. "The best diets begin in the mind," Dr. Forman insists.
